Frederick John "Fritz" Bolton, a retired St. Olaf college religion professor and Lutheran pastor died on Tuesday, April 27, 1993 at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield, Mn. He was 67.

Bolton, an Adams, Mn. native, taught at St. Olaf College in Northfield from 1958 to 1986. Prior to joining the college, Bolton was pastor at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea from 1951 to 1954, and an interim pastor at churches in the American Lutheran Church's eastern district. He also served as a Minnesota National Guard chaplain in the 1950s. A military training accident during World War II left Bolton partially blind, cutting short his Navy career and convincing him to become a pastor. While recovering from his injuries in 1944, "what I saw with the other patients got me more interested in human values," he said in 1986. "From that point on I wanted to work with people, and the ministry seemed to be the right direction."

Frederick was the son of Dr. R.L. and Lela Bolton, former residents of Adams. He spent his boyhood years in Adams and was a graduate of Adams High School. He was a 1948 graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul. After receiving his degree from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul in 1951 and a Call to First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, he was ordained into the Christian ministry at his home church, Little Cedar Lutheran at Adams. He also did graduate work at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J.

Frederick was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Edwin and Vincent; and a granddaughter, Thea Bestul. He is survived by a son, David of Minneapolis; two daughters, Lisa Young, Richmond, Va. and Jennifer Bestul, Northfield, Mn.; three grandchildren; and his former wife, Dorothy.

Services were held Thursday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Northfield. Interment was at Little Cedar Lutheran Cemetery, Adams, Mn. on Friday, April 30.
