In 1900, John B. Anderson was indicted for the murder of his wife.

John B. Anderson was a farmer who lived in Marshall Township, Minnesota. He killed his wife with a flat-iron and then hid in a straw stack on the farm. Anderson entered a plea of not-guilty.

The state was represented by R.E. Sheperd, the then county attorney of Mower County, and the defendant by Lafayette French, who had consented to appear for Anderson through the entreaties of his friends. After thorough investigation of the matter, the defendant's counsel became convinced that Anderson was insane at the time he committed the crime. He had fallen from a mast of a ship years before, receiving an injury to his head from which he suffered thereafter. This injury to the brain, his counsel believed, had affected his mind to such an extent that he was not responsible for the act. He withdrew his plea of not-guilty and entered a plea of guilty of murder in the second degree.

John B. Anderson died at Stillwater Prison in 1913.*

*From a letter to Byron Huseby from Ida Anderson Fox postmarked July 7, 1986: ..."He (John Anderson) passed away in 1916 possibly 1917. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Knutson let us live in their building also let us have 30 acres to farm. As it was then when I got $550-650 and we bought enough cows also got chickens, etc. Knute Gordon and Peter Finkelson came and told us about his death..."

From Mower County Courthouse records: On 8/14/1899, land was transferred from John B. Anderson by probate to (Sven?) Anderson. (First name was difficult to read).
