Marian Louise Armstrong

Marian Louise Armstrong, 87, died Sept. 23. She was born in Bedford, IN, to John F. Armstrong and Maude C. (Pafford) Armstrong in 1929.

She graduated from Bedford High School (1947), earned a BS in Ed from Indiana University (1952), was a librarian for Edison High School in Gary, IN, (1952-56) and in 1956 became librarian for the Paris (France) American School. She received her MLS degree from IU (1958), was librarian for University School — a laboratory school of the IU School of Education (1957-1968), and helped move the school to a new facility in 1964. In 1969 she was appointed Assistant Professor in the IU Graduate Library School, where she taught reference resources and services, supervised student field work and was editor of the GLS (later SLIS) Alumni Newsletter.

She was an active member of professional organizations, including the American Library Association, the Indiana Library Federation and the Association of Indiana Media Educators. She was a member of the IU athletics committee (1971-77). She served on the Executive Council of the IU Alumni Association (1996-1999) and was on the Woodburn Guild Board of Governors (2001-2004).

She received the SLIS Distinguished Alumni Award (1990) and the IUAA Gertrude Rich Award (1999). She was elected to the library honorary society, Beta Phi Mu, in 1958 and received the Beta Phi Mu Chi Chapter Service Award in 1992.

Marian served several terms on the Monroe County Public Library Board. During this time the Ellettsville Branch Library was dedicated (1990) and the Main Branch enlarged (1996). She was a former president of the Monroe County Public Library Foundation. She was a member of the Hoagy Carmichael Jazz Society, the Friends of Art, The Monroe County Historical Society and participated in the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, John Jerry Armstrong.
