Civil War Record:
enlisted as a Private in 1st Georgia Reserves on May 2nd 1864 in Atlanta, Ga by Capt. W.L. Hubbard for the duration of the War.    He was age 45, 6' 6" in height, fair complexioned with blue eyes and light hair.  Occupation:  Farmer. The Patient Register of the Wayside (1st Louisiana) Confederate Hospital, Charleston, SC 1862-1865, shows Pvt. W(illiam) J. Astin admitted to the General (Encampment) Hospital No. 2, Summerville with Debility on 18 December 1864 and discharged December 19 1864.
