Lawrence M. Worden, 83, of Cottage Street died Saturday at a Brunswick hospital.

He was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, a son of Hartlett and Ann Daniels Worden.

He moved to Freeport with his family at the age of four then became a United States citizen. He graduated from Freeport High School.

Mr. Worden worked most of his life for local shoe manufacturing firms. He was a foreman for 13 years making the Bostonian shoe for Commonwealth Shoe. He also worked for Freeport Shoe Co. for many years. Mr. Worden retired from L.L. Bean in 1980 after working for 10 years as a shoe salesman.

He enjoyed acting with the Freeport Variety troupe, boating, camping at Winslow Park and traveling with MaineLine tours.

He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Freeport, United Church of Christ.

An active member of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department for 64 years, he served 15 years as deputy chief and seven years as chief of the fire department. Mr. Worden was also a 50-year member and past master of the Freeport Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol A. James of Cumberland; a son, Russell B. of Waldoboro; a brother, Wallace of Clarksdale, Miss.; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Parish Congregational Church of Freeport. Burial will be in Burr Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth.
