Mathew John Smith, 85, of Greeley, died May 28, 2012 at Life Care Center of Greeley. Mr. Smith was born on September 29, 1926 in Ft. Collins, Colorado to Stanley and Alphronia (Lamb) Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Pierce High School in 1944. On June 26, 1947 he married Shirley Lewis. Mr. Smith worked for 26 years for the Colorado Department of Transportation as an Engineer. He also spent 14 years with Western Geophysical.

Mr. Smith was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and the Odd Fellows. He served in the U.S. Army from May 1945 to December 1946 and was part of the U.S. Occupation Forces in Japan at the end of WWII.

Mr. Smith loved to fish and took all of his grandchildren on fishing trips. He also enjoyed his gambling, was an avid sports fan, enjoyed all sports and supported all the local teams. He was the family champion at throwing horseshoes. He spent a lot of time tending to his yard and gardens.

Mr. Smith is survived by his children, Curtis Smi.. and Deborah, Pam Car..... and Lyle and Mathew Smi..; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sisters, Sybel Jac....., Amy Phe..., Jeanette Hut....... and Carole Par.... and special family friends, Nikki and Jared Adams.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his parents, brothers, Wayne, Howard, Charles, Verne and Rupert Smith and sister, Betty Rex.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the V.F.W. and/or the National Parkinson Foundation in care of Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 West 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634.
