Gladys Louella Duncan was born August 23, 1920, in Mile City, Montana, to Christian H. and Gladys Sammons Weisz. Her father was a rail car man, and a prison guard, so Gladys moved with her family a number of times, spending her childhood in Montana, Washington and Kansas. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Xavier, Kansas, with a degree in music, and also attended Kansas University and Baker University, gaining her teaching credentials.

Gladys taught music in the Santa Rita, Corral de Tierra and Chualar schools, and then became an elementary school teacher in the Santa Rita School District for many years.

She married her husband of 40 years, William Duncan, in 1976, and had the opportunity to travel with him all over the country. She was fond of sewing and many kinds of needlework. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary #6849, and a 52-year member of Reveille Chapter, Salinas, of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Rebecca’s, along with her mother, when her father was a member of the International Order of the Oddfellows.

Gladys passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2016, at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her husband, William, her daughter, Nita (Terry), her stepdaughter Evelyn, and her stepdaughter Linda. She is survived by her son, William Richards (Becky), stepson Daniel Duncan (Debbie), stepdaughter Gail, stepdaughter Cindy, grandchildren Colleen, James, Robert, and David, numerous step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Many thanks to her wonderful caregivers including, Lupe, Leti, Cynthia, Vicky, and Monica amongst others. All who enabled her to remain in the comfort of her home.

Right up until her death, Gladys and her caregivers were still making stuffed animals for the children at Shriners Hospital for Children, so in lieu of flowers, donations to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento would be appreciated.
