Earl Jay Rohland, a long-time resident of Citrus Heights, was born in 1934 in La Grande, Oregon to Rutherford and Blanche Rohland. He passed away November 3 at Apple Ridge Assisted Living in Sacramento. His father’s job changes took Earl to school in various places in Oregon and California. He graduated from San Juan High School in Citrus Heights, where his father managed Sylvan Lumber Company.

Shortly after graduating, Earl joined the Air Force and re-enlisted several times, retiring after more than twenty years of service. He was a radio intercept officer in the Air Force Security Service. He served in Germany, Japan, Korea, and Viet Nam. He then retrained into avionics. His most rewarding duty was teaching avionics at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. In his own small way, he helped win the cold war against the Evil Empire.

On retiring, Earl enjoyed biking, hiking in the Sierra, gardening, and his passion for photography. He was an active member of Sierra Christian Church in Loomis for many years. Never having married, he was very devoted to his family. As his parents aged, he cared for them at home in Citrus Heights until their death. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard Rohland. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Royalty and nieces and nephews. Earl was known for his sense of humor and was a joy to be around. He was loved and will be greatly missed. Friends are welcome to attend the graveside service to be held at 1PM on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Sylvan District Cemetery (7401 Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights) and are invited to attend the memorial service to be held at 6:30PM on Monday, November 14, at Apple Ridge Assisted Living (3950 Annadale Lane, Sacramento).
