Mattie Sue Morris was born to George and Ocie Wherry on June 5, 1922 in Huntsville, AL. She was the eighth child of ten siblings, all of whom preceded her in death.

Mattie Sue Wherry (affectionately known as Fox), seeking greater opportunities, left Alabama in her late teens responding to an ad in the newspaper 'seeking help and relocated to Chicago, IL. She landed the job as a housekeeper and enjoyed a meaningful, successful career as the "help," working for high profile, respected clients such as the James Montgomery and James Flemings families of Chicago.

Mattie met Lewis Curtis Morris II in Chicago in 1951. They were inseparable and united in matrimony, sharing fifty-five glorious years together. From this union, three children were born: Lewis III (aka Big Eyes), who preceded her in death, Patricia (Little Mama), and Novella (Sweetie). Mattie was a faithful and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, employee, and friend. Mattie retired in 1991 after devoting over forty years of superb service to her well-established and respected clientele.

She had a passion for reading, beginning with Jet and Ebony magazines and culminating with O Magazine. She enjoyed her favorite television programs such as Good Morning America, The View, ABC News, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, The Haves and The Have Nots, and most importantly, her favorite girl, "Oprah!"

Mattie leaves to cherish her memories and cultivate the legacy her daughters, Patricia and Novella (Julius); daughter-in-law, Annie; brother-in-law, Frederick (Olive); sisters-in-law, Ella Mae Morris and Marjorie Dupree; nine grandchildren, Terry, Kimberly, Lewis IV, Berlynn, Julius II, Cecily, Candace, Sirlester, and Andre; eleven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. She also leaves three special friends, Mrs. Richardson, Shirley Dupree, and Irene Miller-Morris.
