He was born on Sunday, December 9, 1923 to James and Ica N. (Harms) Montgomery in Friendsville, IL. He married Velma Jean Bayler in April of 1942 in Mt. Carmel, IL. She passed away in 2005.
James was preceded in death by his wife Velma; one son, Darrell Ray; 2 brothers, Sam and Robert Montgomery; 4 sisters, his twin, Ethel Fay Hershey, Geraldine Burton, Betty Tippett, and Mary Lou Kramer; and one son-in-law, Tom Hughes.
He is survived by one daughter, Pamela Hughes of Pekin; 2 sisters, Shirley (Ron) Bookhout of West Salem, IL, and Dorothy (Fred) Kramer of Mt. Carmel, IL.
James worked for 35 years as an iron worker and rigger for CPC International's Pekin Plant, retiring in 1980. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. He received the American Campaign, Good Conduct, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medals, the World War II victory medal and the Overseas Service Bar. He was a member of the Moffett Rod and Gun Club, and the American Legion Post 44.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Woodrow Cemetery in Pekin, with Elder Dan Allen officiating. He will be greatly missed by his daughter.
