Ruben Hoff and his wife Esther moved to Mobridge in 1960, when he went to work for Kramer Trailer Sales, a manufactured home business. Two years later, he sold manufactured homes on his own in Mobridge.

In 1970, Ruben and his son Roy opened Hoff's Homes and RVs on Eleventh Ave. East, across the highway from the Mobridge Cemetery. In 1974 they purchased some land on West Highway 12 and moved their business to that location.

The business that had begun as a mobile home and travel trailer retail dealership, expanded to selling manufactured housing, travel trailers, motor homes, pickup campers and toppers. They serviced all and carried a line of parts and accessories.

The total business was purchased by son Roy and wife Jan Hoff on Jan. 1, 1976, when Ruben retired and moved to Aberdeen. In Aberdeen, he owned and operated an apartment building until they returned to Mobridge in 2001.

Ruben died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at the Linton Hospital in Linton, N.D., at the age of 88.

He was born June 7, 1918, to Jacob and Magdalena (Vollmer) Hoff on their farm near Eureka. Ruben grew up on the farm and attended a rural school near his home. Following his education, he continued to work on the family farm until his marriage.

On Oct. 6, 1940, Ruben and Esther Obenauer were married in Eureka. They lived and farmed in the Eureka area until 1958 when they moved into Eureka, where he did construction work until moving to Mobridge.

Survivors are his sons, Roy (Jan) Hoff of Mobridge, Jim (Linda) Hoff of Los Alamitos, Calif., and Bob Hoff of Westminster, Calif.; one daughter, Gloria Keyes of Edina, Minn.; six grandchildren, great-grandchildren and four stepbrothers.

Memorial services for Ruben were held Tuesday, Dec. 26, at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge. The Rev. Keith Kraft officiated. Burial was in the Eureka City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home.
