Life Legacy
Donald Ervin Bishop, born in Reform, Alabama on August 25, 1933 passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 83 years of age. Don is survived by his wife, Dean Wilburn Bishop whom he married on October 29, 1952, his two daughters, Deborah Lynn Hollier (husband, Clayton Hollier), Daphne Kay Sumrall (husband, Darryl Sumrall), and son Donald Eugene Bishop (wife, Christie Wadsworth Bishop), five grandsons, four granddaughters, 8 great grandchildren and was anticipating the arrival of another great granddaughter in December. He also leaves behind two beloved sisters-in-law, Sue Wilburn Thompson and Betty Wilburn Lewis, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Cappe Ann (Thompson) Hallberg, who he was honored to escort at her wedding. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Ervin Bishop and Annie Mae (Davidson) Bishop, brothers, Joseph Douglas and Oliver Dexton Bishop and in-laws, Raford Coleman Wilburn and Easter Ophelia (Akin) Wilburn.
Don served in the U. S. Army in the mid-1950s including a tour in Germany, and enjoyed sharing his stories and pictures with his family especially his grandsons and son-in-law who are/were active duty military in the last twenty years.
Following his military service, Don worked for J Dudley Hutchinson Company and later opened his own food brokerage business bringing Stokely-Van Camp (including Gatorade and Beenie-Weenies), Domino Sugar, United Salt and many other products to the residents of Mississippi. He and Dean later opened Dean’s Frame Shop and provided custom framing to the residents of Columbus, MS for a number of years until their retirements.
Don loved meeting people and enjoyed teasing everyone he came in contact with through his many hobbies. During his lifetime, he took a course in photography and then practiced with portraits of family and friends, nature shots and family reunion group shots. He was a member of the Pine Beetle cb radio club in the 1960s and later in life, he took and passed a course to receive his Ham Radio license. He enjoyed an 8 am Ham radio group meeting for many mornings in the last 10 years of his life. In addition, Don and Dean traveled across the U. S. camping with family and friends. He and his daughter, Debbie began a genealogical search for the Bishop and Wilburn ancestors more than 30 years ago. Don used his photography training to take over 600 photos for genealogical researchers.
As many of his friends and family know, Don had a number of physical ailments and had suffered with heart, kidney, cancer and pulmonary issues over the past forty years. At the time of his death, Dr. Hector Dox had just completed a successful surgery repairing an aortic
aneurysm at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS. Don died several hours later as a result of a massive coronary event. The family is grateful to Dr. Dox, his staff and the staff of the CCU of Baptist Memorial Hospital for their faith-filled care of our husband and father and their care of our family at the time of his death. While we are grieving at our loss, we are grateful for the dignity that they provided to Don in supporting his request for the surgery.
In addition, the family would like to thank the numerous medical professionals who have worked with him over the past forty years, including Dr. Jason Dunn, whom Don identified as his friend, the staffs of Windsor Nursing Home and Fresenius Kidney Care.
The family will be celebrating Don’s life at a later date at a private family service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to their home church, Calvary Baptist Church or to the charity of your choice in Don’s memory.
