Rebecca I. Hughes, 74, formerly of East Bangor, passed away, Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Slate Belt Health and Rehab Center. She was the wife of the late Richard P. Hughes, Sr., who passed away, October 31, 1993. Born in Easton, September 10, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Merlin R. and Pauline (Bird) Oyer and the step daughter of the late Lois (Redline) Oyer.
Prior to retiring in 1996, she and her late husband owned and operated Richard's Fine Footwear, Washington, NJ. Rebecca was a 1960 graduate of Pen Argyl High School and attended Ryder College. She was a member of East Bangor United Methodist Community Church, a former member of First United Evangelical Congregational Church, Bangor, and a member of Calypso Chapter 163, Order of Eastern Star. Rebecca was a pillar of strength for her entire family, including her grandchildren who she loved dearly. She supported them all in more ways than could ever be explained. She taught them so many of life's most valuable lessons. She also gave willingly of her time to her friends and her community.
She is survived by a son, Richard P. Hughes, Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Saylorsburg, four daughters, Jennifer L. LaBar of Bangor, Jacqueline A. Durney and her husband Jeffrey of Stroudsburg, Julie B. Barr and her husband David of Pen Argyl, and Jill S. Bush and her husband Scott of Bangor, 10 grandchildren, Katherine E. and Christopher R. Hughes, Emily S. and Zachary D. LaBar, Patrick J. and Molly A. Durney, Tanner D. and Tadd A. Barr, and Jacob S. and Rachel E. Bush, and a brother Lee E. Oyer and his wife Sharon of Pen Argyl. In addition to her husband and parents, a brother Edward B. "Ned" Oyer preceded her in death.
A Memorial/Celebration of Life Service will be held, Monday, November 7, 2016, at 2 PM at East Bangor United Methodist Community Church, 136 W. Central Avenue, East Bangor. Family and friends are invited to call beginning at 1 PM until time of services at the church. Interment will be private at St. John's Cemetery, Bangor. The Ruggiero Funeral Home, LLC, Pen Argyl is in charge of arrangement.
