Spanish Statesman. Born into a politically distinguished Jewish family from Valencia, he was appointed Royal Chancellor by King Ferdinand in 1476. He played a pivotal role in the discovery of America. When negotiations between Christopher Columbus and the King and Queen faltered, Santangel personally financed Columbus' first voyage across the Atlantic. In return he received Columbus' first reports of his voyage and discoveries. During the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, King Ferdinand prohibited officers of the Inquisition from disturbing Santangel and his family on account of their religious beliefs.
