Born Wednesday, January 21, 1953, in Morgantown, WV, she was the daughter of the late Frances (née Shepherd) and Daniel Wilson Fortney.
Denise received her Bachelor of Science from Hood College, and later received her Master of Arts from Radford University. She taught at Hampton University in Virginia before returning home to Hagerstown to work as Vice President of Fortney Homes, Inc., a business founded by her father in 1947, where she worked until her death.
Denise served as president of the Hagerstown Garden Club, an organization she loved and was a member of for nearly thirty years. She was also an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, and a former board member of the Maryland Manufactured Housing Association. In her earlier years, she was an avid equestrian and competitive dressage rider.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, William Eliason Pennington, Jr.; her three daughters, Meghan Denise Pennington of Washington, DC; Katherine Eliason Pennington of Hagerstown, Md. and Carter Armistead Pennington of Hagerstown, Md.; her stepdaughter, Elizabeth Pennington
Naess of Chapel Hill, N.C.; her brothers, Daniel Wilson Fortney, Jr. of Roanoke, Va. and Lawrence Shepherd Fortney of North Richland Hills, Tx; and a sister, Mary Kay Fortney Cook of Radford, Va.
Services were held on in the Chapel at Saint James School, Hagerstown Md., and officiated by the Revd. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan. The burial at Rose Hill Cemetery will be private.
