Texas Ranger Captain Frank Jones, son of noted Texas District Judge William Early Jones and Keziah Rice Rector, brother to two Texas Rangers, William Kenner Jones and James Russell Jones, was killed in a shootout against cattle thieves. Captain Jones and his Rangers chased the thieves to Pirate Island that was part on U.S. soil and part Tres Jacales, on Mexico soil. Wounded and falling from his horse, Captain Jones continued firing. His young Private tried to assist him, but Captain Jones knowing they were outnumbered, ordered his Rangers to save themselves and leave. He was killed moments later, age 37. The living Rangers later said they did not realize they were on Mexico soil when chasing the cattle thieves/bandits.
A few days later the Mexican government returned his body to the U.S. His bereft widow, Helen Baylor, had him buried on her father's ranch at that time. Years later in 1936 he was reinterred in El Paso County, Texas, where a Texas State Historical Memorial Marker was placed in his honor.
Family:
Frank married lovely Grace O'Grady. She was a daughter of Irish immigrants to America, John O'Grady and Kate Cahill. Living in Kenner County, Texas, Frank and Grace had two daughters, Grace Kathleen Jones (1887 - 1957) and Frances Mahguerite Jones. Their joy was short lived for his loving wife Grace died at age 31 in 1889, and infant daughter Frances died in 1890.
About 1892 Frank Jones and Helen Baylor married in south Texas. She was a daughter of Colonel George Wythe Baylor, Second Arizona Cavalry Regiment, CSA. He was a Major in Texas Ranger over several units in the 1880s. Frank and Helen's son Frank Baylor Jones was born about 1893, the same year that Captain Frank Jones was killed on June 30.
Helen Baylor Jones previously lived in Mexico, and returned there after Frank's untimely death. Helen Baylor Jones died May, 1903, Monterrey, Mexico, cause of death and resting place unknown. Helen's father, retired Colonel George Wythe Baylor, resided in Guadalajara, Mexico from December 25, 1903, and could remain until August,1909 according to his passport. Colonel Baylor later returned to Texas and lived in San Antonio. Upon death in 1916 he was laid to rest in Confederate Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.
Helen Baylor Jones sister Mary Courtenay Baylor resided in Guadalajara, Mexico from August 18,1900, and was still teaching school there in 1909. Possibly young Frank Baylor Jones was living with his Aunt Mary when he died Christmas Eve, 1908, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, cause of death and resting place unknown.
