Following cremation a memorial service was held at Pursel-Davis Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Rev Gregory Ellcey of the First Congregational Church officiating.
He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1946 and attended Grinnell College for two years. He transferred to Washington University in St. Louis and obtained a bachelor degree in retailing. He entered the family business Gillam's Jewelry becoming the fourth generation to do business on Marshalltown's Main Street.
He married Elise Richter in 1950 in Kirkwood, Missouri. The couple divorced and he married Ruth Watts in 1971 in Marshalltown. They bought the family business in 1973. Ruth and Skip divorced in 1992 and sold the store in 1993. He continued to manage it until his retirement in 1995.
Mr Gillam was a certified gemologist of the American Gem Society, member of the Elks Lodge and Lions Club. He was a founding member of the Marshalltown Camber of Commerce Ambassadors. His hobbies included billiards, bowling, golf, and researching the American Civil War.
Survivors include his daughter Christine Austin; sons Patrick, Matthew, and Steven; step-daughter Pam Smaha; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Elise, and brother George.
