C. J. Rosen, 96, of East Peoria, passed away at 11:37pm on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria.
C. J. was born November 10, 1919 in St. Rose, to Anton and Louisa Liening Rosen. He married A. Esther Plummer on August 24, 1946 in Peoria. She preceded him in death on September 12, 2003.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Ann (David) Swearingen of East Peoria and Dr. Joyce (Dr. Ross) Hemphill of St. Charles; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Julie Damm of Peoria.
He was preceded in death by his son, Tom; one grandson, Michael; one brother, and three sisters.
C.J. was a decorated WW II veteran and received a Silver Star, Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and the air medal with 1 bronze cluster. He proudly served with the Army Air Corps as a B-24 Bomber Flight Engineer on 13 missions. His plane was shot down twice during his service. After the first incident, he returned to service after just a week to hurry and complete his fifty missions. After the second incident, he was captured and endured nine months as a POW until May 2, 1945. C.J. was one of over 20,000 captured who endured 85 days of the Death March across Poland.
C.J. retired from Caterpillar Tractor Co. as a manager in tool development in 1981. In his retirement he volunteered at Methodist Hospital. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in East Peoria, Blue Lodge, Eastern Star, and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #2.
A funeral service for C.J. will be held at 10:30 Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in East Peoria. Pastor Gabe Wanck will officiate. Visitation will from 5-7:00pm Friday, November 4, 2016 at the funeral home. Additional visitation will be from 10-10:30am Saturday at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be at Oak Grove Bible Church Cemetery in East Peoria.
C.J. asked if memorials could be left to the Red Cross for the help they provided while he was in service.
