He was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Roodhouse, the son of Herman and Mildred Story Spencer. He married Virginia P. Vestel on July 1, 1940, in Paris, Mo., and she preceded him in death April 8, 2005.
He is survived by one daughter, Pat (husband, Terry) Fry of Springfield; three sons, Jim (wife, Margie) of Plainfield, Ind., Charlie (wife, Sharon) of Winchester, Va., and John (wife, Brenda) of Roodhouse; 11 grandchildren, Marc, Mike and Michele Fry, Melody Wagner, Nick, Ashley, Abby, Luke and Jeremy Spencer, Hannah Clark and Alyssa Boyce; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lorena Knight of Roodhouse.
Mr. Spencer was a faithful member of Barrow Baptist Church and was a longtime Sunday school teacher. He had worked at Reynolds Buick in Roodhouse and at Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville for many years. He farmed west of White Hall, and for many years enjoyed decorating his farm for the Christmas season with thousands of lights for all to enjoy. He was a school bus driver for the North Greene School District. One of his greatest pleasures was being a volunteer at Passavant Area Hospital for nearly 14 years. He loved to entertain residents at area nursing homes by singing and playing the guitar. He could talk and visit with anyone, having never known a stranger. He was very proud of his family, and enjoyed being with his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barrow Baptist Church, with burial at Pine Tree Cemetery at Patterson. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Memorials are suggested to the Passavant Hospital Chaplain Fund, or to Barrow Baptist Church. Condolences may be left at www.airsman-hires.com.
