Enlisted, 1896, in Troop 2, Squadron A, NYNG, New York City. He was a member during the Spanish American War era but was not selected to serve with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry.He saw field service with Squadron A during the Croton Dam Strike, April 1900. He was discharged in 1902.

He served in Squadron A with his brother George Phelps Robbins and brother in law, Robert Peabody Barry Jr, 1895 - 1902 ( including Troop A , Spanish American War ) and Henry Bogert Clark. His sons Geoffred W. and Montgomery served 1934 - 1937 , in the 101st Cavalry Regiment ( Squadron A ).
