Lewis R. Powell was born July 25, 1923 in Jeffersonville, Indiana and passed away October 6, 2016 at St. Luke Hospital with his wife the love of his life for 36 years, his daughter Pamela Kirkpatrick and her husband Ali were at his bedside. He also has a son, Ron Powell and his wife Jean, living in a VA Hospital, The Dalles, Oregon.
His father, mother, four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. Sisters, Dr. Helen Lange, New Albany, In., Florance Kelley, McAllen,TX Mary Louise Smith, Indianapolis, In., and Lenora Reed, Plainfield, In. Brothers, Raymond Powell, Terre Haute, In, and Carroll Powell, Indianapolis, In. Also, survived by five grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. One grandson deceased Chris Kirkpatrick. Other grandchildren, Kelly Ann Holtry, Jeffrey Alan Powell, Sheri Lee Powell, Anna Marie Caruso, and Jennifer Ellen Berrath.
Lew graduated from Indianapolis High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII stationed in the South Pacific and the Phillipines as an Aviation Repair/overhaul unit #2 Admiralty Islands, Pitylou air baseFleet Service, Samar Phillipine Islands. Discharged with honor in 1945. Returning to Indianapolis and civilian life attending Business College becoming a book keeper for a small manufacturer of lawn mowers. Progressing over the next few years through several major companies as Plant Manager of a subsidiary of Diamond National Corp., then Operations Mgr, for Airpax Electronics and eventually branching out on his own becoming President of Commercial Vinyls, Inc developing various kinds of plastics. He always said he went from bookkeeper to President which took several years. Sold the business at 57 and retired to Texas 1980 to be near wife's twin sister and family. Retirement did not last long as he went to work for a beautiful School in Houston, Duchesne Academy, all girl school, K-12, staying 8 years as Business Manager. After Duchesne Academy we established a small company refurbishing mobile homes for Vanderbilt Mortgage which lasted about five years. Retired again, joined the Houston Golf Association where he became a 25 year member and became an Honorary Member in 2006. Was also a Volunteer at Conroe Regional Medical Center for several years. Elks member in Indiana for 52 years, River Plantation 36 year member, and First Baptist Church, Conroe for 36 years. In 2009 he was selected as a WWII Veteran by the Lone Star Honor Flight along with 108 Veterans for their second flight to Washington DC to visit WWII Memorial, Koren and Viet Nam Memorials and Arlington Cemetery. Motorcade escort to and from airport and around Washington DC.
A memorial service will be at Cashner Funeral Home on Thursday, November 3, 2016 starting at 11:00am, Interment will follow in the Houston National Cemetery. Thank you to Doctor and Nurses at St. Luke, Phoenix Health Care, Dr. Jeromy Laningham and Cashner Funeral Home for all the wonderful care given to Lew and our family.
