Michael H. Cooney, 62 of Woodstock, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Woodstock on December 21, 1953 to Donald J. and Beatrice M. (Menzel) Cooney. He married Deborah M. Curtis on March 11, 1983 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Palatine IL.

Michael graduated from Marian Central Catholic High School in the class of 1973. He went on to study at McHenry County College before transferring to Worsham College of Mortuary Science, graduating in the class of 1977. Michael worked in the funeral industry for over 40 years and was an owner of Schneider Leucht Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home for the last 28 years. He was proud to serve our community with a passion for helping those in their time of need and he always did so with a skillful hand and a compassionate heart. For many years he volunteered at the hospital during the holiday season by playing Santa Clause for children who were sick and bringing them toys. He enjoyed many vacations with his family traveling to many destinations, but his favorites were Florida and the Great Smokey Mountains. Michael was also known as Chief, and nicknamed so by his children and their friends for always being there to lead them, guide them, and support them throughout their many walks of life. He enjoyed many things in his life, but most importantly, he loved his family and his dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah M. Cooney; his son, Shawn M. (Janice) Cooney; his daughter, Erin M. Young; his grandchildren, Lillian, Margaret, Clara, and Kade; his siblings, Patrick Cooney, Debra (Dan) Riggle, Timothy (Linda) Cooney; Daniel (Sue) Cooney, and Kevin Cooney; his father-in-law, Edward Curtis; and his sister-in-law, Terry (Mark) Walke; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, non-legally adopted children, and very dear friends; who were all loved so much.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, Tyler Young; and his mother-in-law, May-June Curtis.

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Schneider Leucht Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave. in Woodstock. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11:30 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave. in Woodstock. Burial will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charity.

Michael's family would like to thank all those who were there to care for him and everyone else for all their support.
