Darlene Mae (Cox) Malone was born on August 1, 1928, near Moorhead, Iowa to Dewey and Alma Bertha (Benson) Cox.

She graduated from Woodbine High School in 1946.

On July 3, 1946, Darlene married Walter R. Malone at the Methodist Church's parsonage in Sac City, Iowa. They were blessed with three daughters and a son.

The couple farmed in the Dunlap area and then moved into town in 1961.

After the children were raised, Darlene ran the scales at the Rock Quarry in Logan, Iowa and worked at Larsen Café as a waitress. In 1986, they moved back to the farm. Walter died in 1996.

Darlene loved the outdoors, riding her 4-wheeler, and always took some of her produce and quilts to the Four County Fair in Dunlap, Iowa. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed taking ceramic classes.

Darlene died on Sunday, October 30, 2016, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home at the age of 88 years, two months and 29 days.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Malone; two daughters, Judy Lantz and Diane Rief; two infant brothers, Dewey and Keith Cox; three brothers, Larry, Charles and Gary Cox; one sister, Bertha Morton; and four in-laws, Doris Cox, Margaret Cox, Robert Morton, and Ted Archer.

Left with memories are two children: Joanne (Rich) Haskins of Woodbine, Iowa and Robert (Tonia) Malone of Dunlap, Iowa; two sons-in-law, Donald (Mary) Lantz and John Rief all of Woodbine, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandsons; six siblings, Donald Cox of Woodbine, Iowa, Janet Archer of Castana, Iowa, Carolyn (Frank) Archer of Moorhead, Iowa, Ronald (Linda) Cox of Schleswig, Iowa, Patricia Hardy of Moorhead, Iowa, Stanley (Chris) Cox of St. Louis, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Louise Cox and Barbara Cox both of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be 3-8 pm Thursday, Nov. 3, at Fouts Funeral Home, Hwy 30 & Court Streets, Dunlap, Iowa, with family receiving friends 6-8 pm. The Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Friday, Nov. 4, at the Congregational Church, 702 Jeroleman St., Dunlap, with burial 11:30 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap.
