Amy Ruth Mayo Buchanan, 107, of Navasota died Wednesday morning, October 26, 2016 at the Seasons on Water Street in Navasota.

Amy Ruth Mayo was born on July 25, 1909 the child of John Mayo and Naomi Laura Teel Mayo. Ruth was born in a farm house located a few miles outside of Saratoga, Texas in what is now the Big Thicket National Park. Named Ruth from the Old Testament book in the Holy Bible, she lived up to this name as her Christian beliefs were reflected in her daily life.

Her maternal grandfather, J. W. Teel, a Baptist preacher, was a tremendous influence in her life, shaping her spiritually and educationally. He was instrumental in Ruth attending college during the depression. He penned a special inscription in the Bible that he used to marry Ruth and Rice. Ruth has placed that same inscription in her family's Bibles ever since.

Ruth graduated from Baylor Female College, now Mary Hardin Baylor, where she majored in home education. While there she was an officer in the Academia Society, associate editor of the yearbook, The Bluebonnet, vice-president of the Home Economics Club, vice-president of the East Texas Club, reporter for the Baylor Bells, the college newspaper, pitched for and managed the baseball team and participated in many other clubs and sports. All this and she graduated in three years. Following college she taught school in Saratoga and helped support her family during the depression.

Ruth married Samuel Rice Buchanan, Jr. on June 2, 1934 in Saratoga, Texas. That marriage lasted 70 wonderful years until Rice's death in 2004. They moved frequently in their early years of marriage while Rice was in the oil business, but settled down when he went into farming in Washington County. Ruth taught homemaking at Brenham High School for 5 years before they moved to Navasota following W W II.

She quickly became active in the Navasota community. Among the many involvements she was a member and President of the Navasota Civic Club, President of the Music Study Club, and inaugural member of the Pink Ladies, a group of hospital volunteers at Grimes-St. Joseph Hospital and continued this for over 35 years, headed drives to raise funds for the Community Chest, United Way and the Red Cross, a founding member of the Edgewood Country Club and was very active in the drive to develop the state park at Old Washington on the Brazos. As a member of the Democratic Party, Ruth served as election judge for several years. Ruth never missed an election and is proud that she has voted in every local and presidential election for the last 96 years. She was very active in the support of the schools in Navasota for over 14 years. She was President of the PTA and was given an honorary Life Membership for her extensive work. And many other organizations that she gave time and energy to that we cannot list them all.

Ruth was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Navasota. She was President and Director of the Women's Missionary Union for 25 years a mission organization that was very dear to her heart, Department head of almost every department and served on the Financial Board, Budget and Finance committees, several Pastor Search Committees, Social Committee, three building committees, pastoral care and taught Sunday School for many, many years. Ruth also worked with the Aggie Baptist Student Ministry for years feeding enormous amounts of "More Casserole" to hungry and homesick students all with a smile and kind words. Former pastor Don Dilday once said "If I could have a woman deacon, she would be it". She remained in an active leadership role at the church until age 96.

Ruth and Rice were active in planting other Baptist churches in the community of Navasota. The Hispanic Baptist Church in Navasota was a heartfelt and sincere outreach by Ruth and Rice. They spent many years working in the growth and development of this church and prepared a way for the church to grow into their current site on Highway 6. The family has met many residents of Navasota who have expressed their thanks and appreciation for all that Ruth and Rice did for their community.

Ruth and Rick were the center of a large and extended family they were the heart of the family. Ruth demonstrated her love with grace by listening and providing counsel with kindness and sincerity always following a path of faith. Their lovely home was a frequent gathering place for many family get-togethers and holidays. Ruth was an excellent cook and often lunches and dinners found 20 to 30 family and friends at their table. Many family members have been welcomed for extended stays in their home. This kindness was also extended to friends, visiting ministers and Baptist youth groups. Their hospitality extended into their late 90s.

Ruth and Rice bravely took road trips across the United States with their children, nieces and nephews and then their grandchildren. They especially loved the rugged west and the nature of Yellowstone. They always made these trips educational for all the children by stopping at historical markers, famous landmarks and inter-twinned stories of U. S. History, Indian lore and the study of the land.

Ruth loved gardening. She worked in her flower beds and yard throughout her life tending to varied day lilies and beautiful regionally-rare golden rain trees. From the picture windows in their home you could see the beauty of her work and many birds that flocked to her feeders. Her yard was selected several times as Yard of the Month by the Navasota Garden Club. She was an avid reader and read at least two newspapers a day, two books a week and her Bible daily. She spent many hours discussing important and current issues with her all of her family members and she and her grandchildren could be found working on crossword puzzles together and she would have them all looking up words in the dictionary. She loved music especially piano music, big band and Lawrence Welk. She was an active member of the Tuesday Bridge Club for 61 years and was an excellent player. She hosted many bridge parties over her lifetime and was considered quite competitive by her brothers, sisters and in-laws.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Rice Buchanan; her brothers and sisters, Miley Cariker, Jesse Lee Mayo, Ernest Mayo, Hattie Foster and Joe Mayo. The Buchanan brothers and sisters (who were like her very own) who preceded her death were Birdie Waterman, Terrell Buchanan, Willie Mae Hansen, Laura Mitchell and Dell Miller.

She is survived and loved by her devoted children and their spouses, Bill and Linda Buchanan, Nancy B. Callaway and Dr. Terrell and Cathy Buchanan; her 9 loving grandchildren and honorary pallbearers are Lani Burgar, Kellye Clark, Mike Callaway, Greg Buchanan, John Buchanan, Charlie Buchanan, Anne Lockett, Ben Buchanan and Laura Buchanan; 14 great-grandchildren as well as too many to count loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Geri Douglas and the caregivers at The Seasons on Water Street in Navasota for their kindness, love and attention given to Ruth in her last years and to her family as well. We also wish to thank Carol, Mary, Dorothy, Freda, Rosa and Delois for helping Ruth remain in her home as long as possible.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the following, University of Mary Hardin Baylor Scholarship Fund, in memory of Ruth Buchanan, 900 College St., P. O.
