Mary Margaret (McCown) Secord passed away at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, with her family at her side.

She was born Oct. 23, 1921, in Danville, Ill., to Claude E. "C.E." and Augusta Louise (Lapcheska) McCown. The family moved to La Crosse in 1938, where she later married Leslie Severson in 1945. They later divorced, having two daughters, Dawn Marie Severson Kinard and Linda Sue Severson Bentzen, along with two grandsons, Brenton E. Bentzen and Tyler Lee Kinard.

Mary then married Delmer John Secord in 1968. This gave her a unique and wonderful relationship with her kindred spirit, and also brought a stepdaughter, Diana (Secord) Gantka with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary worked for many years at various places including Moen Photo, Electric Auto-Lite, Metalics and the Ivy Motel. She struggled on a daily basis from early on with Rheumatoid Arthritis, not allowing her to do daily tasks or one of her favorite things, "dance." She danced semi-professional with her brother, Bob, in their younger days, and danced the last time on Christmas with her grandson, Brent.

Mary is survived by her husband, Delmer; daughters: Dawn M. Kinard, Linda (Wade) Bentzen; two grandsons: Brenton E. Bentzen and Tyler L. Kinard; stepdaughter, Diane (Rodney) Gantka; numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers: John "Jack" (Audrey) McCown and Richard "Dick" (Dorothy) McCown; a sister, Janet (Richard) Anderson; sisters-in-law: Lila Quall, Marie Secord, Lorraine (Joseph) Brieske, Alice (William) Homestead and Lois (Stanley) Hessleberg; and many nieces and nephews including Teresa and Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert McCown; a niece, Susan McCown; and brothers-in-law, Robert and Raymond Secord.

Burial at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery.
