Joseph P. Schilling, 88, of Champaign, died at 12:00 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 20, 2006) at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
He was born March 6, 1918, in Farmer City, a son of Joseph P. and Lillian Meara Schilling. He married Lois Petry on Aug. 21, 1941, in Champaign. She preceded him in death on March 7, 2004.
Also surviving are a son, Pat Schilling of Champaign; four daughters, Mary
Schilling of San Diego and Linda Ross, Katie Good and Ann Deedrich, all of Champaign; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Hyland of Champaign.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Schilling, and a sister, Margaret Schilling.
Mr. Schilling graduated from Moore Township High School in Farmer City and attended the University of Illinois.
He was a bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps and flew B-17, B-24, B-25 and B-29 bombers during World War II. He flew missions in Europe and North Africa.
He was a devoted member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Champaign, Knights of Columbus, Serra Club and the UI Alumni Association. He enjoyed his grandchildren's activities, golfing and Illini athletics.
