Daughter of James Gordon and Lulu Irene (Lowden) Carroll, Margaret lived her early days, also the early days of the depression, with relatives on a farm. She graduated from Saint Agnes High School in 1947. On May 14, 1949 she married Bill Hay and they lived in South Bend where Bill worked for Indiana Bell. In 1959 they moved to Seattle where Bill worked at Pacific Northwest Bell and they lived there for 30 years. Meanwhile, Margaret was working at a laundromat, a candy store, a bakery and a school cafeteria. They retired to Coupeville in 1990.

She was survived by six sons, Gregory Thomas Hay, Mark William Hay, Christopher Joseph Hay, Michael Alan Hay, Jeffrey Vincent Hay and Patrick Edward Hay; five daughters, Judith Ann Crown, Kathleen Marie Lehman, Toni Theresa Todd, Barbara Sue Feathers, and Mary Elizabeth Hay. She was predeceased by one daughter, Angela Noel Blodgett.
