United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. Born in New York City, New York, he graduated from Columbia University in 1889, earned a law degree in 1890, admitted to the bar in 1891 and began practicing appellate law in New York City. He was the first Jew appointed to serve on the New York Court of Appeals in 1914 and served as Court of Appeals Chief Judge, (1927-32). In 1932, President Herbert Hoover appointed Cardozo a US Supreme Court Associate Justice and he served until his death. He died of a stroke at age 68 in Port Chester, New York.
