A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Agnes Teresa Meany, D.C., was celebrated December 19, 2012, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Sister Agnes Teresa died of natural causes on December 14, 2012 at 96 years of age at the Daughters of Charity senior care residence in Emmitsburg, Md. On December 17, she would have celebrated 77 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity.
Born in Washington, D.C., on October 10, 1916, Sister Agnes Teresa was the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Galvan) Meany. She was one of six children and was named Agnes Gertrude Meany at birth.
After completing her secondary education at Immaculate Conception Academy in Washington, D.C. in June of 1935, Sister Agnes Teresa entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Baltimore, Md., in 1935. Sister Agnes Teresa attended St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, N.Y., where she earned her Nursing Diploma in 1947. In 1951, she completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Education from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. In 1962, Sister completed her Master of Science Degree in Administration and Human Relations from Boston University, Boston, Mass. Sister Agnes Teresa held a Life Fellowship in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
During her early years in the Community, Sister Agnes Teresa served as Business Manager at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn (1937 – 1938). She served as an elementary teacher at St. Ambrose in Endicott, N.Y., (1938 – 1944); in nursing services and as a nursing supervisor at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., (1944 – 1949); as the director of the nursing school at St. Margaret Hospital in Dorchester, Mass., (1951); as the director of nursing and administrator at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., (1951 – 1956); an administrator at Sisters Hospital in Waterville, Maine (1956 – 1958); administrator at St. Mary Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., (1958 – 1961); as assistant administrator and director of nursing services at Carney Hospital in Boston, Mass., (1961 – 1965); a nurse at Villa Louise in Baltimore, Md., (1966 – 1968); an assistant administrator at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Md., (1968 – 1975); administrator at Jenkins Memorial Home in Baltimore, Md., (1975 – 1977); a special project coordinator at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla.,(1977 – 1978); as associate administrator and senior vice president at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md., (1978 – 1987); and as a member of volunteer services and guest relations at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., (1987 – 2005). Sister Agnes Teresa joined the Ministry of Prayer in Emmitsburg, Md., in 2005. She lived in Emmitsburg until the time of her death.
Sister Agnes Teresa's siblings all preceded her in death. In March of 2012, Sister Agnes Teresa was preceded in death by her nephew James Bergmann of Silver Spring, Md. She is survived by her niece, and her nephews. Donations in her memory may be made to the Daughters of Charity, Province of St. Louise, and 4330 Olive Street, St. Louis, Mo., 63108.
