Alta Wood Ireland Cottrell, 92, died suddenly Monday, December 25, 2006 in Danville, Kentucky. She was a resident of Georgetown, having set up housekeeping in 1933 upon marriage to John Austin Cottrell, who predeceased her in 1998.

Ms. Cottrell was the daughter of John Robert and Mattie Baldwin Ireland. She was the great granddaughter of Joseph and Sarah Ann Hale Hughes.

She was predeceased a brother, Chester Ireland, sisters Lucille Reynolds Courtney, Elva Adams, Mildred Penn (William H.), Nora B. Ireland Brooking (Judge Charles Murray), and Verbal Lee Simon. One sister, Ona Mae Ireland Hukill, survived her.

She was a beloved mother to David, Carolyn and Jane; a beloved grandmother to Clark, Keith, Melissa and Rob; a beloved great-grandmother to Allyson and David; and a loving in-law to Bob, Edith, Susan, Allan and Jennifer. She will be dearly missed by her family, faithful friends Joann Lusby & Margaret Greynolds, devoted neighbors Jerry & Debbie Sewell & family and Catherine Whitlock who attended to her needs so lovingly, and a host of extended family members including dedicated nieces Patsy Rich, Mattie Brown and Marion Simon.

She was born and raised on a farm but readily embraced the neighborly life of a small town wife and homemaker. She was active in numerous civic and social organizations and a loyal fan attending Garth High and Georgetown College athletic events.

She was a lifetime member of the Democratic Party and a valuable asset to her husband's political successes. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Christian Church and Spindletop Hall where she played bridge weekly.

She was blessed with a natural competitive spirit, which manifested itself early. In elementary school she skipped second grade, won academic contests and twice was Scott County 4-H representative in state competitions. She received many awards in Scott County Fair competitions in both cooking and sewing. An avid bridge player since learning the game at age 26, she and her partner, Bess Thornton were Scott County Champions two years consecutively and then retired from further competition. She was a recipient of two Kentucky Colonel awards given by two governors. She excelled in Croquet playing, ping pong and numerous card and board games. She was hard to beat!

She embraced life enthusiastically and was a magnet to all she met. After raising her children she enjoyed a career working for the state in Frankfort. She retired as a Supervisor in the Personnel Department after 17 years of service. She relished traveling with her bridge friends, taking trips throughout the country and Europe. She was currently a resident of the Bee Hive Home in Georgetown.

She was a wonderful and courageous southern lady...loving, caring, generous, kind and gracious to all. She was a renowned cook. Being a guest at her dinner table was an honor. She possessed a special ability to set an unscheduled bountiful meal from the contents of her refrigerator and pantry. She will be forever missed and remain eternally in the hearts of her family and faithful friends.
