Mr. Rush Gent, age 93, of Kingsport, Tennessee, formerly of the New Garden community of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Friday (October 28, 2016) in Holston Valley Medical Center. Born May 9, 1923 in Russell County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Delbert and Learah Viers Gent. A World War II veteran, he had served his county in the United States Army. He had formerly been employed by Island Creek Coal Company, retiring after 37 years of service and was a member of the UMWA Local 1374. He was a member of the New Garden Baptist Church and in later years attended Finney Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings, Alderson Gent, Delta Boyd, Glenn Gent, Ruth Taylor, Levi Gent, Delbert Gent, Jr., and Giles Gent.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-six years, Nadyne Musick Gent of the home; two daughters, Regina Joyce Gent Cabell and husband, Michael of Alexandria, Virginia and Melinda Denyse Gent McMurray and husband, Jack of Fall Branch, Tennessee; one sister, Darlene Henderson of Lebanon, Virginia; five grandchildren, Dustin Jackson and wife, Allison of Johnson City, Tennessee, Sasha Cabell of Alexandria, Virginia; Amy Thompson and husband, Scott of Myrtle Beach, Jason McMurray and wife, Michelle of Kingsport, Tennessee, and Leslie Hardin and husband, Wes of Knoxville, Tennessee; seven great-grandchildren, Sydney Thompson, Olivia Thompson, Natalie Thompson, Loren McMurray, Addy McMurray, Zain Hardin, and Lyla Hardin; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday, November 5, 2016, in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Stephen Musick and Rev. Jody Breeding officiating. Entombment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Lebanon, Virginia.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Herman Gent, W.L. Gent, Danny Chaney, Jimmy Taylor, Dwayne Charlotn, John Charlton, Jason McMurray, and Wes Hardin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Russell Lee Herndon, C.B. Yates, Arlan “Dan” Honaker, and Wendell Hart.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Saturday.
