Elaine E. Simon was born in Stanford, Montana to George A. and Anna (Stein) Giese on May 28, 1928. In 1933, the family moved to Henry, SD and in 1935 they moved to a farm four miles north of Watertown. Elaine worked at OP Skaggs, National Tea, Herberger's and was a ticket agent at the Union Bus depot.

On September 2, 1951 she married Leslie Simon in St. Martin's Lutheran Church. They lived on the Simon family farm in Kranzburg Township where they raised four children. The couple moved to Watertown in June of 1987. Elaine loved the farm and in her home she kept the good memories alive by decorating with the use of chicken motif in nearly every room.

Elaine was an active member in her church and the community. She was president of St. Martin's PTO, president of St. Martin's mission group, secretary for the Codington County Republican Women, and was president of the Codington/Hamlin Farm Bureau Women. Elaine was also a census enumerator for Kranzburg Township and the clerk of Kranzburg Dist. #52 school board.

She did volunteer work at the Salvation Army filling Thanksgiving baskets, wrapping Christmas gifts and sorting food received for the pantry. After retirement, Elaine and Leslie enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arkansas. She was an avid Twins fan and loved to listen to gospel and county music.

Elaine enjoyed many crafts, including ceramics, and making quilts for each grandchild. She loved gardening, was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed playing the piano and accordion by ear.

Elaine is survived by her children, Mark (Val) Simon, Marlene (Duane) Mahnke, Merrill (Katherine) Simon and Melanie (Gary) Swanson all of Watertown, SD; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leslie Simon on January 6, 2004, two sisters, Marjorie Stoltenburg and Leona Kluck, and her son-in-law, Jim Berg.
