His Christening took place on February 11, 1911. Seven thousand guests were entertained at the christening of William Henry Lawrence Peter Wentworth-FitzWilliam wrapped in the historic veil given by William the Conqueror to the FitzWilliam family. 50,000 people gathered in the park that night to see fireworks, with an ox roasted on the North Hill.

He served in the military during World War II as a Special Operations Executive. He died in an airplace crash with Kathleen Kennedy Cavendish, Lady Hartington.
