After graduation he entered the U.S. Marine Corps where he served in communications and counterintelligence and served two tours in Vietnam. The family lived in Japan and in many of the United States during his career.
In 1978 Dean and Dorothy retired to Whidbey Island and settled in Greenbank. Dean worked as a substitute teacher and also sold real estate.
He was survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children, Kelly Read, Michael Read and Teresa Hansen; and by his sister Faye Casebeer. He was predeceased by his brother Orville.
