Dana Robert Sharp, 82, of Maryville, MO, passed from this life on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at the Parkdale Manor Nursing Home, Maryville.

Dana was born on August 7, 1934, in Bruce, IL. His parents were Adalai Denton Sharp and Marjorie Margurite Davis Sharp, they preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his brother, Charles Denton Sharpe, and his sister, Iona Dewey.

He graduated high school in Newburg, MO, then went to the Moberly Missouri Junior College for 2 years. He received his B.S. in Education from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville, and later his Master in Education from the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO.

Dana was captain of his basketball team in 1954, at Moberly Junior College. They went on to be national champions. He received the NAIA All-American Award for basketball. He then played 2 years at Northwest in Maryville.

He retired as the Eugene Field Elementary School Principal after 20 years of service. He was an educator for a total of 35 years.

Memberships include the First United Methodist Church, and Rotary Club, both of Maryville, the Wakenda Lodge #52, AF & AM, Carrollton, MO, Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, and the Missouri Retired Teachers Association.

On September 12, 1954, Dana was united in marriage to Carolyn Jean Byland, in Moberly, MO.

Dana and Carolyn enjoyed traveling and to camp in their pop-up camper. They traveled to most of the United States and Canada, but also traveled globally, especially to Panama.

Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Carolyn, of the home in Maryville; 2 children, Connie Vern Carpenter, Columbia, MO, and Curtis Denton Sharp, Liberty, MO; 2 grandchildren, Valerie (Roy) Arnold, Yukon, OK, and Rachel (Johnny) Long, Enid, OK; 5 great grandchildren, Calvin Arnold, Emma Arnold, Landri Arnold, Luke Arnold, and Rayleigh Long; 2 brother in laws, David Byland, Moberly, MO, and Jim Byland, Key Colony Beach, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church, Maryville; the burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, also of Maryville.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM, Friday, November 4, 2016, at the church. A masonic service will be recited at the conclusion of the visitation at the church.

Services are under the direction of the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home, Maryville, MO.
