John was born in Grove City on Dec. 11, 1921, to Albert and Alma Stoops Schmelzer.
He married Mary Lou Berk on Sept. 7, 1946; she preceded him in death on March 19, 2013.
He was a longtime active member at Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City, where he attended the Weaver Disciple Sunday school class.
John served honorably in World War II from 1942 to 1945 as a combat infantryman. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal.
Following the war he began his career at Cooper Bessemer, where retired as a supervisor on the Erection Floor after 42 years of service with the company.
He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603, Grove City; New Castle Consistory; and Zem Zem Shrine, Erie.
John and his wife enjoyed traveling. They visited all 50 states except Hawaii. They spent many winters together with friends at Ramblers Rest in Venice, Fla.
He is survived by a son, David Schmelzer and wife Margaret, Waynesburg, Pa.; two grandchildren, Shawn Schmelzer and wife Vicki and Samantha Matter and husband Rodney; four great-grandchildren, Jake and Luke Schmelzer and Michala and Tresa Matter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; an infant son; and four sisters, Anna Belle Duffy, Viola Orr and infant twin sisters, Alice and Aleen Schmelzer.

Service: Funeral at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday (11-1-16) in the sanctuary of Grace United Methodist Church.
Burial: At Crestview Memorial Park after the services Tuesday, with military honors.
