Robert D. Alton, 81, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at his home.


Born July 7, 1926, in Monmouth, Ill., he was the son of Atlee and Gladys Howe Alton. On March 1, 1948, he married Beverly Brendel in Burlington. She died April 24,1988. On Aug. 3, 1991, he married Betty Dell Smith in New London.

Mr. Alton worked in the telephone business for 42 years, most of which was with Contel Corp. He started out on the line crew and worked his way into management, where he served as State and District Plant Manager for the state of Iowa. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in New London. For the past couple years, he attended the New London Christian Church. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the New London Country Club and the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed music, arrowhead collecting and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Robert Alton Jr. of Mankato, Minn.; four grandchildren; two step daughters, Carrol Stukerjurgen of Sun City, Ariz., and Janet Roederer of Mount Pleasant; three step grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents and one son.

The funeral for Mr. Alton will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Rod Cooper officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery in New London.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of Central of Iowa.
