Joseph Hodges Whitaker of Gosport left this earth on Monday, October 24, 2016 to be with his beloved wife, June Reynolds Whitaker at Hearthstone Health Campus at the age of 84.
He was born on July 25, 1932 in Bloomington to Samuel and Wahneta Whitaker. Joe and June were married on July 12, 1953.
Joe attended Indiana State University and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the Gosport VFW Post 7850, the American Legion, Gosport Lions Club, Gosport Community Building Association, Gosport Cemetery Board, a 60-year member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, and a 50-year plus member of the Gosport Masonic Lodge #97. Joe was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather and humanitarian. He was always quick with a joke and was loved by many. He will truly be missed but will live on in our hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Wahneta Whitaker; wife, June Whitaker; and a sister, Marjorie Whitaker.
Joe is survived by two daughters, Jill (Craig) Tucker of Pittsboro, Indiana and Jan (Kirk) Torgerson of Gosport; grandchildren, Andrew Tucker of Phoenix, Arizonz, Kyle Torgerson of Gosport, Ashley Tucker of Indianapolis, Kelly Jo Cameron of Gosport; and his great-grandson, Elijah Cameron of Gosport, who brought special joy to his life.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Chandler Funeral Home-Whitaker Chapel in Gosport with Pastor Kerry Asher officiating. Burial is to follow at Gosport Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
