Uruguayan Statesman. He served as the 38th President of Uruguay from March 1, 2000 to March 1, 2005. He was the son of former President Luis Batlle Berres. He received his Diploma in Law and Social Sciences from the University of the Republic in 1956 and after college, was active in journalism. He was also active in politics and in 1958, was elected Congressman as a member of the Colorado Party. During the period of military rule in Uruguay (1973-1985), he was banished from holding any legislative or official position. After civilian rule was reimposed in 1985, he served in both legislative and government positions. In April of 1999 he won the presidential nomination of the Colorado Party and was elected president in November of that year. He would go on to serve as president from March 1, 2000 to 2005 when he handed power over to the newly elected Tabare Vazquez. He remained active in party politics until his passing.
