September 2, 1926 - October 20, 2016
Melvin L. Warren, 90, a longtime resident of Skagit Valley, passed away at home with his loving family by his side, Thursday, October 20, 2016.
He was born in Ellsworth, Kansas, on September 2, 1926 to Murray and Goldie Jung Warren.
Mel left school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country from January 7, 1944 until he was honorably discharged on May 5, 1946. He was a gunner's mate on the USS Bunker Hill, seeing much action in the South Pacific and receiving numerous accolades and awards. Throughout his lifetime he looked forward to and attending the USS Bunker Hill reunions across the country. One of the highlights of his post military service was the Honor Flight trip to Washington DC just this last year.
Mel was employed for 20 years, by Whidbey Island Naval Air Station as a mechanic, retiring in 1979.
He married the love of his life, Maxine B. Rud in Conway, WA on June 21, 1947.
Driving and travel were his passions. He and Mom left no stone unturned in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Adventure was his middle name.
In Mel's younger years he was an avid sportsman and motorcyclist. He wanted another motorcycle later on, but Mom said "No". He spent several years boating the San Juan Islands, traveling and camping with family and friends.
As time went on, he took up hiking, biking and swimming. He also loved to kick up his heels on the dance floor with the only woman and love of his life, our mom. He was a hard act to follow when it came to loving life.
He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He was loved and respected by family and those who knew him well. Mel had an infectious sense of humor and never missed an opportunity to tell a joke or pull a prank.
Mel was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge # 1604 and the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine B. Warren of Mount Vernon; son, Mark L. (Jacky) Warren of Sedro-Woolley; daughter, Candi Judy of Burlington; two brothers, William "Bill" T. Warren of Redding, CA and Tom A. Warren of Portland, OR; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, Mel would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for those less fortunate in his name.
A military graveside service will be held at Fir-Conway Lutheran Cemetery, on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 12:30 PM followed by memorial service held at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2:00 PM.
