Grace Lunstrum Urfer (Eunice Grace Urfer), 82, died at Morningside House of Friendship in Hanover, MD. on September 28 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She had been a resident of Severna Park off and on since 1964 and permanently since 1984.

Grace, as she enjoyed being called, was born January 23, 1934 in Ellensburg, Washington to the late Paul N. and Cora Joy Lunstrum. She grew up in Ellensburg, did well in school, and went to one year of college there. She then moved to Seattle and took a job at Boeing Airplane Company in a group that processed raw flight test data into charts and graphs used for determining future test needs.

At Boeing, she met Kenneth Urfer. When he joined the Coast Guard, they married and she went with him to tours of duty in Boston, Rochester, NY., Honolulu, New York City, Groton, CT., and Washington, DC.( several times). In Boston, she worked at the Naval Supersonic Wind Tunnel at MIT doing the same type of work she did at Boeing. This work was highly classified and the team was not told what the tests were. Later she realized they were analyzing the reentry data for the space capsules. In the 1980s she began working for Annapolis Banking and Trust Company (AB&T) at first as a teller and then as a branch officer. She later became the chief teller trainer for the company. She retired from AB&T in 1996.

Some of the tours required her husband to be away at sea for extended periods of time and Grace became adept at running the family as it grew. She would get a bit testy when he came home and tried to take over the checkbook.

She became quite active in the wive's organizations wherever they were stationed. She served as President of the club at the Coast Guard shipyard in Curtis Bay, MD.

Religion was a great comfort to her and a large part of her life although the moving aspect of the Coast Guard life caused her to change her affiliation occasionally. Since 1984 she has been a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park.

Grace was a talented artist. She loved painting, calligraphy and the Japanese techniques of flower arranging, Ikebana, and silk art, Tsumami. She loved weeks at the beach with the family. She also enjoyed walking the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail with her friends. One day she mentioned to the President of the Friends of the Anne Arundel County Trails what a wonderful asset the trail was. Shortly after that she found herself on the organization's Board of Directors and its Treasurer. She also served as the Treasurer of the local community association.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Captain Kenneth Dean Urfer; two children, Kenneth Mark Urfer of Reno, Nevada and Theresa Lauren Urfer of Severna Park, four grandchildren and two brothers, Nelse L. Lunstrum of Bothel, WA and Richard L. Lunstrum of Ellensburg, WA. She was predeceased by her sister, Pauline M. Lunstrum Atterbury.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity, The Friends of the Anne Arundel County Trails or Hospice of the Chesapeake. On line condolences may be made to Simplicity Cremation and Funeral Services.
