Obituary as reported in the Punxsutawney Spirit on 9/11/2010

Francis Byron Anthony, 94, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at his home in Pasadena, Texas. He was born April 21, 1916, on a farm near North Point, a son of the late Byron and Susan (Niel) Anthony.

In his early years, in addition to helping on the family farm, Mr. Anthony worked, for a while, at No. 8 coal mine. Mining not being his forté, he obtained a job in a steel mill in Pittsburgh. There, he was injured in an industrial accident, which ended that employment.

In the early 1940s, Mr. Anthony went to work for the Atomic Energy Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He was sent to Philadelphia to study specialized instruments that were used at the laboratory.

While in Oak Ridge, he met Irene Jackson. They were married March 7, 1947. Together, they later moved to Pasadena, Texas. Mr. Anthony became employed there by the Rohm and Haas Chemical Co., where he became a supervisor and worked for more than 30 years until his retirement.

Mr. Anthony was always a gentleman and willing to offer a helping hand. He accumulated many close friends, over his long life, who will sorely miss him. He was always an active man, and until he suffered a massive stroke Aug. 23, 2010, he was his wife’s caregiver, drove his own automobile, mowed his own grass and in general, took care of his home and property.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, surviving relatives include a sister, Helen Horbury of Flint, Texas; a brother, Johnston L. Anthony of Youngstown, Ohio; and a large extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Richard Anthony of North Point, Mark Anthony of Marchand, First Lt. Don Anthony, lost in World War II, Paul Anthony of State College, and David Anthony of Herndon, Va.; and a sister, Clara Ann Hetrick of Hamilton.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at the Fairmont Funeral Home, Pasadena, Texas, with Pastor Chris Richey officiating.
