Vernon Jackson Benton Sr., 101, of Qulin, Mo., died Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Westwood Hills Health Care Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Born Dec. 9, 1903, in Columbus, Ky., son of the late Newton Jasper and Alice Gertrude Lockridge Benton, he was a farmer and a member of the Osborn General Baptist Church.
On June 24, 1926, in Piggott, Ark., he married Ruby Edith Hefner, who preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 1985. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Lee, Gilbert, George, Thomas, Doc and Thurman Benton; one sister, Mary Langley; one granddaughter, Jo Alice Austin and one great-grandson, Derek Austin.
Survivors include one daughter, Doris Marie Ham and husband, Calvin, of Qulin; one son, Vernon Benton Jr., and wife, Betty, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; two sisters, Gladys Powell, of Kevil, Ky., and Geneva Garrison, of Fagus, Mo.; one brother, Robert Benton, of Kevil; two grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Landess Funeral Home in Campbell, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Book officiating. Burial will follow at the Gravel Hill Cemetery in St. Francis, Ark.
