Qatari Royalty. He was the Emir of Qatar from February 27, 1972 to June 27, 1995. He served as the country’s education minister before becoming deputy Emir. He was named the heir apparent in October of 1960 and during the decade, served as prime minister and minister of finance. In February of 1972, he seized power from his cousin Emir Ahmad bin Ali Al Thani and reigned for the next 23 years until he was deposed by his son Hamad bin Khalifa on June 27, 1995 while on a vacation in Switzerland. He remained in France until returning to Qatar in 2004.
