Adolph H. Abrams, "operator of the first motion picture theater" in Canton, Ohio, died at his residence there on Tuesday, 9 January 1940. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and a former resident of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Mr. Abrams arrived in Canton from East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1906, and "opened the Odeon theater, the first house to show films." Six years later he "joined with E. E. Bender in opening the Lyceum," a vaudeville theater. In 1923 he opened the Mozart theater, which he operated until 1934. For several years prior to his death he worked for the Stark County relief administration.

Mr. Abrams was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie Abrams, who died in 1888. His second wife, Mrs. Carrie Lee (McGreer) Abrams, and a daughter, Mrs. Carrie Olivia (Abrams) Beckley, wife of John Goodin Beckley, survived him. Rev. H. M. Kerst conducted services at the Abrams residence, 1606 Frazer Avenue N.W., at 2 p.m. on Friday, 12 January 1940. Interment was at Forest Hill Cemetery.

For Adolph's New Orleans birthplace and his wife's maiden name, see Ohio County, West Virginia, Marriage Record 33:333, consent, "certificate of facts," license, and return for Adolph H. Abrams and Carrie McGreer, 26 December 1902. (The record notes that Adolph had been previously married.)

For Adolph's former residence, confirmation of his Louisiana birthplace, and an approximate birth date of 1866–67, see 1880 U.S. census, Warren County, Mississippi, population schedule, Vicksburg City, ward 1, enumeration district (ED) 70, p. 13, dwelling 129, family 134, "Fredie Abramson" [/sic/] household, for (son) Adolph "Abramson" (age thirteen years; born in Louisiana); National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) T9, roll 667. Note that Adolph's death certificate, for which his wife, Carrie, served as informant, reports—apparently incorrectly—Vicksburg, rather than New Orleans, as his place of birth. Note also that the birth date Mrs. Abrams reported for her husband, 15 September 1871, is several years later than the dates suggested by Adolph's 1880 and 1900 federal census records (1866–1867 or September 1866). For Adolph's death record, see Ohio Department of Health, death certificate no. 6290 (file no.) 22 (reg. no.), Adolph H. Abrams, 9 January 1940; Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, Ohio. For his 1900 census record, see 1900 U.S. census, Columbiana Co., Ohio, pop. sch., East Liverpool City, ward 1, ED 12, sheet 12-B, dwell. 354, fam. 376, John W. Hall household, for (boarder) Adolph Abrams (born September 1866 in La.); NARA microfilm T623, roll 1248.
