Historical sources vary on Maria Sevier's birth year, ranging from 1803 to 1807. What is more certain is that she was one of 11 children born in Tennessee to Walter and Nancy Sevier King. Maria married Elijah Embree in Washington, Tennessee on Jan 29, 1828. Elijah was a widower at that time and he had at least one son with his previous wife, Susan Vincent. No evidence was found that Maria and Elijah had any children together. Elijah passed away on Nov 10, 1846, and was buried in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

After Elijah's death, Maria moved to Missouri joining three of her siblings who had moved from Tennessee earlier: Dr. Thomas A. King, Amanda King Bayless, and Austin Augustus King (the latter would become Governor of Missouri in 1848). Sometime between 1850 and 1853 Maria married again to her second cousin, MAJ Robert Sevier, a farmer in Ray County, Missouri. Maria was Robert's second wife. Robert and his first wife Ann Sibley had two children together, Charles and Isabel. Maria and Robert did not have any children together. Robert Sevier passed away on May 16, 1879. The 1880 U. S. Census showed that Maria was living with her widowed sister Amanda Bayless in Richmond, Missouri. Maria passed away in 1883 in the residence of her stepson, Charles Sevier.
