Jean Baptiste Garic landed in New Orleans about 1738, when he was 22.
He married Marie Antonia Fortuna of Spanish parentage. This union was said to be of real love as his wife was not wealthy and brought nothing to him as a dowry. She died without issue. Jean remained widowed for a long time.
In 1769, the woman he selected as his second wife belonged to one of the proudest and most noble families of the colony.
She was Etiennette Stephanie Gouyon des Rochettes, baptized in New Orleans, February 29, 1748, 32 years younger than Jean.

His life was at times an exciting one as he participated in the New Orleans rebellion of 1767-1769 that had, as its aftermath, the execution of several French patriots by the Spaniards. But his existence was brightened by the companionship of many devoted and worthy friends, among whom was Don Andres Almonaster y Roxas, the famous New Orleans philanthropist and Spanish grandee.
Etiennette and Jean had 4 children: Eulalie Garic born in 1770; Francois born 1772; Celeste Garic (not sure of date); and Etienne des Rochettes Garic born 1779. She was only 9 months old when her father died.
