The 1900 city directory from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, shows that John lived at 648 10th street with his widowed mother and brothers Frank and Conrad.

On October 16, 1901, John was married to Emma Brunkalla at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Athens, Marathon County, Wisconsin. Witnesses were Dorothy Brunkalla, Josephine Fastner, Lewis [Louis] Fastner, and Geo. Schopf. John and Emma had 10 children, Laurence George (1903-1951), Anthony John (1905-1950), Almira Margaret (1908-1989), John Walter (1911-1974), Maurice Roman (1912-1958), Arnold J. (1915-1994), Margaret (1916-1996), Dorothy Marie (1920-1999), George Francis (1922-1985), and Maryann (1926-2002).

John Mohelnitzky was a coffee agent and salesman. He spoke German. His first three children spoke German but had to learn English in order to enroll in the Catholic school.

John worked for P. C. Monday (Peter Casper Monday), a company from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for many years before the early 1930s until before the war began. John, who traveled by horse, sold Jewel Tea among other things.

There were no stores in Wausau at that time. John ground his own coffee to sell. He peddled to all areas around town. John was the only one doing it at that time. Later he was delivering by truck. People liked to buy in small amounts instead of buying big sacks full of sugar, etc.

When P. C. Monday went out of business, John worked for Grand Union doing the same type of thing. He sold other things too, like silverware. He was on the road a lot, out of town.

Buried in the family plot are also Edward Berndt (died 1914) and Rosa Berndt Hornung (died 1926) - they are the children of Emma Brunkalla Mohelnitzky's sister, Elsie Brunkalla Berndt. The two Berndt children lived with John and Emma's family. They were identified as Mohelnitzky on the tombstone because they could only be buried there if they were Catholic. Ed drowned in an ice-skating accident. Rosa died of cancer, and had a daughter, Elizabeth. Rosa's husband remarried before Rosa died
