Teen died of head injury, coroner says
The 18-year-old man who died in a Dec. 21 collision on Memorial Highway died of a skull fracture, the Skagit County coroner said today. Cameron Tessin, 18, of Mount Vernon was the passenger in a 2002 Saturn struck by a 44-year-old Mount Vernon man who State Patrol officers say was driving under the influence at the time of the wreck. The driver of the Saturn, Samantha Sroka, 18, of Mount Vernon, was pulled from the burning car after sustaining burns to her lower body and other injuries, witnesses said. Sroka was in satisfactory condition this morning in Skagit Valley Hospital. The 44-year-old driver of a 1989 Ford pickup was heading east in the westbound lane of Memorial Highway near Highway 20 after 11 p.m. on Dec. 21. Sroka drove into the eastbound lane to avoid the man, but the pickup driver swerved back into his lane, causing a head-on collision, the State Patrol said.
