Billy C. Yates was born in Sewanee, TN on January 4, 1932 to Edna Mae Cherry and William Herman Yates. He graduated from Franklin County High School in 1950 and moved to Michigan following his graduation.

On July 29, 1967 Bill married Marguerita Elaine George, and she survives. He leaves behind two daughters, Valorie Anguiln (Bill) and Katherine Elaine Yates (Dan Piccolo), his beloved granddaughter Adrianna Sage O’Brien, grandson William Andrews II, sister and brother-in-law Gordon and Thelma Steers, brother-in-law James George Jr., sister Erma Sue Fromm, brother-in-law Jack Saren, Godsons Christopher Herrmann, Jason Carros, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Betty Ruth Saren and brother William Robert Yates.

A veteran of the Korean War, Bill was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.

Bill was employed as a Psychiatric Nurse Attendant at Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital for fourteen years before attending Green’s Barber College. He worked at Dascola Barbers until he opened his business, The Hair Spot, with his partner and best friend, Tom Cederna in 1984. Bill was a member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church in Ann Arbor and enjoyed many friendships throughout the community.

His love and respect of nature stemmed from his childhood and continued throughout his life. Nothing was more enjoyable to him than tromping through the woods with his beloved English Setter hunting dogs and his hunting buddies. He will be remembered for his infectious smile and signature wink.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff and neurology team in the Stroke Unit at University of Michigan Hospital for their dedication and care during Bill’s last days.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Iconography Fund at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Ann Arbor, 3109 Scio Church Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103, or to the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, 2101 Wood St., Lansing, MI 48912.
